The Tumbleweed Express will be the first drive-thru marijuana dispensary in the world. Opening on 4/20 (this Thursday!) in Parachute, Colorado. Mark Smith, the CEO of the Tumbleweed Express, converted an old car wash space into the drive-thru dispensary. The Tumbleweed Express has been gaining major worldwide attention, within the past two days the "Today Show" and other national programs showed up to Smith's Tumbleweed Express doorstep. "I didn't set out thinking this would be national news. I didn't have some big epiphany. I just saw a need for our customers." said Smith.
Cars will drive directly through the dispensary, which means that the Tumbleweed Express is compliant with Colorado state marijuana laws that require all marijuana purchases to be purchased on the property and in store. Although, this business model is new to the cannabis industry, the Tumbleweed Express "will have to follow all the rules and regulations that apply to every dispensary." said Robert Goulding, the spokesman for the Marijuana Enforcement Division. Rules that Goulding specifically pointed out was that "nobody younger than 21 is allowed in the premises, even if they are in the backseat of the car. And that no marijuana can be visible from outside the licensed premises."
Colorado was the first state to legalize recreational marijuana in 2014. Since then the state has generated over $1 billion in revenue in 2016, earning the state close to $200 million in taxes and other fees, according to the Department of Revenue. Stuart McArthur, Parachute's town manager, told the Colorado Post "We're excited to have Tumbleweed here and get on the map with something that is totally unique. Google it and you get over 15 pages of hits." As the legalization of marijuana expands, we will begin to see a drastic change in businesses models for the industry.
