Anxiety disorders can have a serious impact on yours and your loved one's daily lives. It can be hard to focus on a specific task, it can make you feel helpless, and even cause severe panic attacks that could send you to the hospital. It is a very isolating disorder and can make you feel helpless.
While there are many medications out there to help out, they have numerous side effects and can make you feel like a different person. But what if there was something that could help you feel relief without any side effects? For many people, myself included, the answer is CBD.
Before I get too far into this article, I want to be clear.
I am not a doctor and before you use any vitamins or medications, you should speak with your health care provider to determine what is right for you.
With that being said, we are going to be going over the specifics of what CBD does for the body and then I'll share my personal experience using CBD to cope with my anxiety.
First off, CBD stands for cannabidiol and it is one of many chemical compounds that are in marijuana. CBD does not have any psychoactive properties, meaning it won't get you high, that’s what THC is for. If you don’t want to get high and want to find relief, then CBD is the perfect solution.
Unfortunately, there is not much research done on CBD's medicinal properties, but there are a few. One study done by Esther M. Blessing in 2015, she tested whether or not CBD is a possible treatment for anxiety disorders which included PTSD. Blessing and her team did a thorough analysis of other studies done on the subject to determine whether it was possible.
She said, “ CBD exhibits a broad range of actions, relevant to multiple symptom domains, including anxiolytic, panicolytic, and anti-compulsive actions, as well as a decrease in autonomic arousal, a decrease in conditioned fear expression, enhancement of fear extinction, reconsolidation blockade, and prevention of the long-term anxiogenic effects of stress.”
Blessing’s findings suggest that CBD can be an option for those who suffer from anxiety.
She concluded, “Overall, preclinical evidence supports systemic CBD as an acute treatment of GAD, SAD, PD, OCD, and PTSD, and suggests that CBD has the advantage of not producing anxiogenic effects at a higher dose, as distinct from other agents that enhance CB1R activation. In particular, results show potential for the treatment of multiple PTSD symptom domains, including reducing arousal and avoidance, preventing the long-term adverse effects of stress, as well as enhancing the extinction and blocking the reconsolidation of persistent fear memories.”
This is amazing to have clarity after years of no one really knowing if CBD will help them or not. Most proof has come from testimonials of CBD users sharing their success stories with the medication. If you want an honest opinion on using CBD for anxiety, keep reading.
Not everyone understands what having an anxiety disorder is like, but those who do know it is not easy to cope with. Feeling stressed over simple tasks because there is already so much going on in your head, worrying about how others perceive you and scared you will be alone because you are difficult to deal with. These are real issues that many of us face on a daily basis, along with people telling us that we are being dramatic and to just get over it.
Once I had my son, my anxiety attacks got worse due to being a stay at home mom and scared that I would fail. I felt helpless because no one understood and I felt like I didn’t know what to do. But I knew I had to try something so I could be present for my son and that’s when I tried CBD.
I tried a tincture that had 1000mg of CBD and not long after I felt relaxed in a way I never thought I could be. My tension/stress headache disappeared within minutes and so did my anxiety. It was a wonderful moment that really changed my life in the best way possible because I knew there was hope.
But as the months went by I realized CBD is not a cure, but an amazing aid to help me with my anxiety. For me personally, I still work on making my anxiety better every day with the help of CBD. It relaxes me and helps me to make decisions with a clear head, but I still need to do other things.
Eating right, drinking water, getting a good nights sleep, meditation, and using my CBD are all staples in my arsenal against my anxiety. But CBD is an amazing medication that has seriously made me a better person and ultimately a better mom and I am proud of that. I am still fighting to do better and some days my anxiety gets the best of me.
But when I use it on a regular basis it helps me have a more positive outlook on everything. If you struggle with anxiety, you are not alone and there is always help. I recommend speaking with your health care provider before trying CBD, especially if you are already taking anxiety medication.
