With the legalization of marijuana in California comes many wanting to capitalize off of that venture. American Green Inc., a cannabis growing company decided to do this in an interesting way. They bought an entire town. American Green Inc. purchased the town of Nipton in California located in the Mojave Desert for roughly $5 million with a plan to invest another $2.5 million into the property to create something special. Over the next year and a half, the company plans to turn the town into a tourist attraction destination that is cannabis friendly.
There is already a general store, a hotel, a school building and mineral baths located on site, and they plan to add more structures that will use renewable energy. “We thought that showing that there were a viable means of having a cannabis-friendly municipality and further making it energy independent could be a way of really inspiring folks to say, ‘Why can’t we do that here?’” said project manager Stephen Shearin.
American Green Inc. plans to feature a new facility to manufacture water infused with CBD which offers all the medical benefits without the THC. Nipton will also feature a production site for edible marijuana products, retail stores, and artist-in-residence programs.
The company plans to make cannabis use more mainstream and unshroud the stigma associated with marijuana. Stephen Shearin spoke with Business Insider saying "The idea here isn't to create 'Woodstock 2017,' It's about creating an environment where people come to work and share in a community." The company purchased about 120 acres of land with a solar farm that will allow them to operate completely off the grid.
American Green Inc. was founded in 2009 and is a publicly traded technology company and is the largest shareholder base of any cannabis-related public company in the US.
They are involved in marijuana dispensary vending machines, tracking solutions, and an app that allows customers to locate dispensaries. They also have a shop on their website that sells CBD oil infused products such as body balms, mints, and even pet treats. According to their website, products infused with CBD offer relief for inflammation, pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures, spasms, and other conditions without disconcerting feelings of lethargy or dysphoria.
The cannabis culture has come far from even just ten years ago, where it was not allowed to discuss openly. Now people are allowed to visit dispensaries in states that have legalized cannabis for recreational and/or medical use. Cannabis culture is becoming more and more mainstream as life goes on, making moves like this one by American Green Inc. potentially more common in the future.
With Nipton, California having such a rich American history, some are unsure of this move but American Green Inc. feels the opposite. “The Gold Rush built this city,” Shearin said. “The Green Rush can keep it moving the way people envisioned it years ago.” Companies like American Green Inc. are hoping to change the game of the cannabis culture and the way it's perceived. Only time will tell if they find a gold mine in the Mojave Desert.
