CBD Oil Improves Autistic Spectrum Disorder - Current Clinical Trials for CBD in Autism 2018

By Aaron M.
New research into Autism indicates that the condition is correlated with endocannabinoid deficiencies. Now, researchers are investigating CBD’s effects on Autism in hopes to validate countless parents who say the drug has provided tremendous relief for their children.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) rates are increasing at alarming rates worldwide and both parents and doctors are desperate for help. Now, Israeli researchers are investigating CBD’s effects on Autistics in hopes to confirm the countless anecdotal claims from parents and caregivers who say that the drug helps the condition.

ASD refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Doctors refer to the disorder as a “spectrum” because no two cases look the same and are caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental factors.

Early evidence shows autism is a result of genetic mutations and a deficit in the endocannabinoid system. Because of this, scientists think that cannabinoid therapies may help some children and adults with the disorder have better communication, less repetitive behaviors, less anxiety, and better social interaction.

About Autism

The disorder is diverse and can be difficult to diagnose. The most obvious signs and symptoms of the disorder begin to show between 2 and 3 years of age. However, some cases may be diagnosed earlier.

Key facts to know about Autism –

  • The CDC estimates autism prevalence in the U.S. to be 1 in 68 children.
  • By gender, the prevalence is 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls in the U.S.
  • An estimated 50,000 autistic teens become adults each year, losing school-based autism services
  • About 1 in 3 autistics remain non-verbal
  • About 1 in 3 autistics have an intellectual disability
  • Autism is often accompanied by conditions such as GI disorders, seizures, sleep issues, ADHD, anxiety, and phobias

The earlier the disorder is detected and diagnosed, the more that can be done to improve motor, cognitive, communication, and sensory processing skills.

Israeli Engineer Develops Device To Detect ASD In Infants

Autism is typically diagnosed through behavioral observations and cognitive abilities. But recent advancements in autism research have produced early-screening tests that could detect the disorder in newborns.

Israeli engineer, Raffi Rembrand, who is a father to an autistic son, developed a device called SensPD, which measures otoacoustic emissions in infants. The devices’ measurements are able to indicate a baby’s sensory perception abilities and can help doctors to detect ASD earlier than ever before.

Rembrand isn’t Israel’s only person working to improve ADS treatment. The country continues to be the world’s leader in CBD studies, and new groundbreaking research into the compound’s effects on ASD show promising early results.

CBD As An Alternative Treatment For Autism

Since the beginning of 2017, Israeli researchers have been conducting first-of-their-kind clinical studies on CBD for treating ASD. In one recent study, 53 people ages 4 to 22 years old were given a CBD oil treatment, administered in drops, for about 2 months.

The CBD was extracted from a high-CBD strain of cannabis called Avidekel, developed by Tikun Olam, Israel’s largest supplier of medical cannabis. These are the key findings from the study.

  • 67.6% decrease in self-injury and rage attacks
  • 70% improvement in hyperactivity
  • 71.4% improvement in sleep problems
  • 47.1% improvement in anxiety and mood
  • 86.7% improvement in social and communication skills
  • 74.5% overall improvement in the quality of life

These results confirm ongoing studies on CBD’s effects in ASD. Currently, Dr. Adi Aran is running the world’s first clinical trial to determine medical marijuana’s effect on children with autism.

Dr. Aran is treating 120 people with autism ages 5 to 29 years old with CBD therapy currently. The trial is scheduled to go until the end of 2018. Dr. Aran is a pediatric neurologist and responds to questions about the trials saying, So far, our impression is that it is working.

A 2013 study comparing children with autism with age-matched healthy children showed that autistic children have more cannabinoid receptors on their white blood cells.

This indicates that their bodies may be trying to compensate for a lack of or malfunction in the ability to produce and utilize endocannabinoids.

According to Dr. Goldstein, this suggests that endocannabinoid receptors are a potential therapeutic target for the pharmacological management of autism care.

If people with ASD have endocannabinoid deficiencies, than cannabinoids from cannabis may help balance their symptoms. And that’s exactly what researchers are investigating.

CBD Oil For Treating Autism

Although the need for further investigation into the long-term effects of CBD, early evidence shows that the compound is non-toxic and safe, even in extremely high, acute dosages.

The compound has been shown in laboratory studies and now in clinical trials to exhibit therapeutic properties such as –

  • Anti-anxiety
  • Anti-depression
  • Anti-convulsive
  • Anti-psychotic
  • Pain Relieving
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • And more

CBD has been approved by many U.S. states to treat several severe chronic conditions including,

  • Epilepsy
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Cancer & Cancer Pain
  • PTSD
  • And more
