About

I spent 10 years in the glass industry before becoming a glassblower - several years as a collector, then about 6 years working at SugarDaddy's Smoke Shop in Boston, MA, buying and selling glass. I always asked glassblowers how they did what they did. During my time at SugarDaddy's, I got to be part of the customers' experiences - watching some people "Ooh and Aaah!!" over the masterpieces, hearing them say, "Oh god! That's amazing!" Then, most would take home a piece for between $15 and $50. Many visitors didn't even look at the masterpieces-- they headed straight for the under $50 shelf and said, " I know I'm gonna break it." I agreed, "Some are prettier, and some work better, but they all do the same job - even the old-school metal and wood ones."

I knew I could get paid to learn to blow glass by making pipes that wholesale for under $15 so, over 14 year ago, in December 2002, I left to invest myself full time in learning to blow glass. I continue to learn every day, especially with the addition of Joe, my apprentice, who joined the team in October 2015. Now that Joe's getting a real feel for the glass, our products are evolving to incorporate his style. He appreciates the 'Gandalf' style sherlock, so we're working to develop one.

I want every smoke shop customer to be able to afford a nice pipe that functions well and isn't made by sweatshop labor. That's why, at sugarmattys, we try to focus on really nice, affordable production (I used to say 'I make cheap crap,' and my regular shops kept yelling at me, so, I started saying, 'I make really nice, cheap crap.' Now we try to say, 'We make really nice, affordable production!'). An American alternative to import glass is hard to come by since most American glassblowers are artists and want to make masterpieces. Here at sugarmattys, we like making pipes people will use every day and we try to design them to work better than the average pipe.
